Introduction to Dreadlocks

Dreadlocks, often referred to simply as “dreads”, are a hairstyle in which the hair is intentionally twisted and tangled into matted strands or braids. This style has cultural and historical roots in many societies, including African, Caribbean and Indian traditions. Dreadlocks are created by either naturally matting the hair or artificially shaping it into strands using various techniques such as tousling, twisting or crocheting.

Classification
There are various ways to section your hair for dreadlocks, each with its own pros and cons. To maximize the benefits and minimize the drawbacks, we combine different patterns. The first two rows are sectioned in a checkerboard pattern to ensure the locks fall nicely and are evenly spaced. From the middle of the back of the head, the sections are arranged in a honeycomb pattern, curving backwards in a semicircle to create a neat, flowing appearance.
Initially, one person sections the hair with small hair ties, allowing us to work together efficiently and ensure you end up with well-formed, uniform dreadlocks.

Backcombing Method
Once the dreads are neatly sectioned, the next step is the backcombing method. Here, individual strands are teased using a special comb. This teasing helps the dreads hold better and grow out evenly. Rather than starting thin and gradually thickening over time, the strands are teased beforehand to create volume, earning the nickname “the lion’s mane.” This is especially beneficial for individuals with thin or sparse hair.
It’s crucial to note that the more you tease your hair, the more length you’ll lose. However, if you prefer to retain more of your original length, you can opt for less teasing. In this scenario, the dreadlocks will naturally thicken over time.

Crochet
The final step involves crocheting the dreadlocks, employing two methods. One method involves pulling the hairs through the dreadlocks in a zigzag pattern to make them disappear. The other method focuses on reinforcing the dreadlocks for long-lasting enjoyment with minimal maintenance.
We prioritize strengthening the dreadlocks method, investing considerable time in each individual dreadlock, crocheting until it’s firm. Initially, your dreads may protrude noticeably and feel somewhat unfamiliar. However, after a few days of regular washing and use, they will soften, requiring less upkeep.

Dreadlocks Care

Approach Care

When caring for the roots, we only take care of the roots (approximately 7-10 cm from the scalp). This care is especially suitable for dreadheads whose lengths are already nicely matted or who prefer their dreadlocks to have a more natural look. Crocheting the dreads too often, especially if their felting process is already advanced, can interrupt the natural felting process. Additionally, caring for the roots is more cost-effective than complete care.

Complete Care

With the complete care, we take care of the entire dreadlocks. Each dreadlock is crocheted through once, and all bumps and knots are worked out as much as possible. This option is particularly suitable for those who haven’t maintained their dreadlocks in a while and want to touch them up. However, we don’t recommend this option too frequently, but rather 1-2 times a year, as the dreads need time to felt naturally.

Dreadlocks Cost

Initial consultation: costs vary depending on the salon or stylist.
Dreadlock creation: Prices can vary greatly depending on the length and thickness of the dreadlocks desired, as well as the amount of time the stylist spends.
